How to create a relaxing haven in your bathroom

by Rachel Newcombe, on Feb 7, 2018 11:30:00 AM

A bathroom is one of the essential rooms in your home, but as well as serving a practical purpose, it can also be a place to relax, unwind and de-stress.
When you’ve had a busy day and been on your feet for hours, there’s nothing quite like coming home and getting into a warm bath or shower.

But not every bathroom is relaxing to be in. Whether you feel relaxed and happy to take your time with bathing, or are super keen to get it done and dusted as soon as possible so you can be out of the room, can be influenced by the state its in.

If your bathroom isn’t quite making it yet on the calming scale, it can be improved, even without a major bathroom makeover. With the right colours, style, lighting and ambience, you can transform a functional bathroom into a haven of relaxation. Here are some ideas on creating a bathroom haven in your home.

Colour

The colours you use in a bathroom can have an impact on your mood, helping you feel uplifted and energised, or relaxed and calm.

For example, bright colours such as pink or red, as used in tiles or bathroom accessories such as towels, can be invigorating and energising – perfect if you need a boost in the morning. But when it comes to relaxing, a softer and more neutral colour palette can be more appropriate.

If you think about how most spas are designed, they’re usually based on earthy natural colours, such as cream, chocolate brown, pale grey or soft white, mixed with natural textures for interest and sometimes a darker contrast flooring. You can also add extra pops of colour through accessories.

Scent

Like colours, different types of scent can influence our moods. Scent can be used in bathrooms to add ambience, and help soothe the senses.

Choose classic scented candles to burn whilst you’re in the bath, or more contemporary reed diffusers that you can safely leave in action all the time.

Think about the possibility of introducing some small fragrant plants or flower stems too. Lavender is widely regarded as being a calming scent or try a fresh, clean and spa-like herb such as rosemary. Use them fresh or dried and display them in small glass vases.

Lighting

The lighting in your bathroom can make or break the haven. Small spotlights set into the ceiling can help create the ambience you desire (save the bright lights for more task focused lighting, for example near the hand basin where you’ll shave, do make-up or brush your teeth).

To add a luxurious feel and make the room stand out for your as a haven, go for a grand form of lighting, such as a chandelier.
Or for the ultimate in relaxing bathroom lighting, try having LED lights fitted into your floor. Having the light emitted upwards can be produce a surprisingly ambient feel, which is perfect for setting the right kind of atmosphere for a relaxing evening bath.

Style

The style of a bathroom and how it looks as you enter the room can affect how relaxed you feel too. A messy, cluttered and unloved bathroom is unlikely to feel all that appealing to spend time in.

Clean lines and tidiness can lift the spirits. If your toiletries and beauty products appear to be taking over, spend time sorting out some storage ideas. Where possible, tidy things away into cupboards, or invest in some small wicker baskets to keep things more ordered.

Hang towels in an orderly fashion, or try a wall mounted towel rack where you can roll up and stack fresh towels ready for use.

It will look a lot more inviting and become somewhere you enjoy escaping to for some peace, quiet and pampering.
