Using natural stone in the bathroom

by Tamsin Allen, on Feb 14, 2018 1:56:00 PM

Using stone will give your bathroom a warm, organic feel, whether slick and modern or roughened and rustic. It holds the heat so is perfect for shower areas and wet rooms and looks fantastic for years. Here are a few ways to use natural stone in the bathroom.

Big limestone tiles look great in a shower area – modern yet organic and spa-like. As it is quite a soft stone, clean regularly with a stone-specific cleaner to remove soap residue. Do not use normal shower cleaners as they can be acidic and caustic and cause discolorations and etch marks in the limestone.

Stone doesn’t have to be big solid slabs, it can also be delicate patterns like these pretty Palazzo mosaics from Fired Earth. They look great behind a counter-mounted basin and with wall-mounted taps.

If you have quite a large space to work with, consider long limestone flagstones laid in a herringbone pattern. Here the tumbled edges of the stone add to the period charm of this bathroom and prevents it all looking too new and perfect.

This French country house takes flagstones to the max and is the perfect complementary texture to the large steel bath. We love the beautifully-balanced mixture of modern, rustic and traditional.

If you’re not sure about a whole bathroom in stone, add just a touch with the Aegina bowl from Fired Earth. It’s smooth on the inside but rough on the outside so that it feels beautifully organic.
