007 ways to create a James Bond style bathroom

by Sally Narraway, on Feb 7, 2018 5:15:00 PM

With the latest action-packed Bond adventure Spectre on the big screen we take a look at how to create a show-stopping bathroom that Britain's favourite secret agent would love.

001

While we're not suggesting exploding vanities, jetpacking toilets or flamethrowing hairdryers, you'll want to include a few smart products that would make Q branch proud. Your hit list might include waterproof televisions (try Aquavision), music-playing mirrors (try HiB, Keuco or Roper Rhodes), programmable bidets (TOTO, Geberit, VitrA and Villeroy & Boch), sensor-operated taps (Hansgrohe and Iqua by Aquis) and some cool bathroom audio (Denon's HEOS 1 and Kohler's Moxie showerhead speakers). Also check out the TimeAster tap collection by Rubinetterie Stella, with dials made to look like luxury watches.

For Bond, dashing good looks are a given – think smart masculine colour schemes in greys, chrome and striking black. Sleek lines and streamlined forms will ooze contemporary cool. If you want to up the luxe factor, consider introducing elements of dark wood and marble. And for a touch of glamour, splashes of gold and even a sprinkling of diamonds (check out Bibliotheque's Strass Crystal porcelain tiles) will work too. If you love the amazing settings pictured in the 007 films and like the idea of a Bondscape in your bathroom (perhaps snowy mountaintops in the Austrian Alps or the night skyline in Istanbul), Glamora via Alchemy Design Award offers a custom service for its Glamtec ceramic bathroom wallcoverings. Or if you have a favourite film still, Original Style can create a bespoke mosaic panel in glass, stone or ceramic from a photograph.

Next to set the scene for a steamy shower encounter… romantics will enjoy the new generation of touchscreen interface showers available with audio, chromatherapy, aromatherapy and nebulizer options (try Hansgrohe's RainBrain, Kohler's DTV+, Aquademy's Spastream, Fantini's Acquadolce and Grohe's F-digital Deluxe as well as systems by FIMA Carlo Frattini and Zucchetti).

Likewise any bathtub needs to be large enough for two to share and the more high-tech, the better. Consider whirlpool or spa hydrotherapy, chromatherapy, aromatherapy and sound systems (look at offerings by Teuco, Jacuzzi, Kohler, TOTO and Kaldewei).

And hand-in-hand with seduction, make way for a cocktail cabinet or drinks facilities in the room. While a concealed drinks cubby would be suitably Bond-esque, it might be as simple as a decorative tray (Zara Home offers a wide selection), a tray table (try Design Vintage) or perhaps a mobile drinks trolley that will double as bathroom storage. Trolle Iacobucci offers customised airline trolleys that can serve as luxury mobile drinks cabinets, featuring elements such as Swarovski crystals, leather, sound systems, coloured LEDs, Bluetooth and refrigerators, all operated on batteries. They're also sturdy enough to knock out any passing Bond villain.

006

Bond always has a surprise or two up his sleeve, so you might like to include a secret compartment within your design… perhaps hidden storage within a wall recess or bath panel, a false-bottomed bin or a valuables stash behind a tile (DTile). Other unexpected storage areas  might include a mirrored cabinet concealed in the wall (Keuco), one that opens upwards to reveal the contents within (Robern and Keuco), or vanity units with countertop compartments with pop-up lids (Toscoquattro).

Finally, since close-shaves go without saying for Ian Fleming's suave British secret agent, you'll want to create the perfect place for male grooming with a generously sized vanity area with concealed storage in its design. Gadgets like Simplehuman's Sensor mirror with 5x magnification and natural sunlight simulation will ensure you're looking your best while a large or twin basin will also prove invaluable for any leading ladies. For sophisticated furniture, check out Milldue, Toscoquattro, Keuco and Oasis via Alchemy Design Award.
